A Year of Triumphs and a Vision for the Future
Dear Black Players for Change Players and Advocates,
As 2024 draws to a close, I'm reflecting on a year of remarkable achievements and looking forward with immense optimism to what we can accomplish together in 2025. This year has been a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering commitment of our players, coaches, and advocates to drive positive change in the world of soccer.
Celebrating Our Victories:
Zero On-Field Incidents: We achieved a historic milestone with zero documented instances of on-field, player-on-player racial discrimination in MLS first-team matches this season. This signifies a cultural shift towards greater respect and inclusion, and it's a testament to the impact of our advocacy and education efforts.
Empowerment Series Success: The BPC Empowerment Series, launched this year, has provided invaluable resources and mentorship to aspiring Black players, coaches, and front office personnel. We've equipped individuals with the tools they need to break down barriers and thrive in the soccer industry.
Juneteenth Initiatives: Our collaboration with MLS and adidas to celebrate Juneteenth amplified Black voices and stories within the sport. This partnership showcased the rich history and contributions of Black individuals to soccer and fostered a deeper understanding of the ongoing fight for racial justice. The campaign reached a total audience of 51 million.
Hometown Heroes: The 2024 MLS Hometown Heroes presented by RBC Wealth Management at the 2024 MLS All-Star was a resounding success, showcasing the league's commitment to community engagement and social impact. The program effectively partnered with Columbus-based organizations and individuals who are making a positive difference in their communities. Through the Hometown Heroes initiative, MLS amplified the stories of these individuals and their contributions to society.
When We All Vote: The 2024 partnership reached more than 14 million voters and BPC was represented by U.S. Men’s National Team and FC Cincinnati defender Miles Robinson. As we enter a new year, When We All Vote continues the fight for our democracy and we are excited to continue this work.
Giving Impact: BPC donated over $20,000 in funds and resources to several organizations in support of those organization’s missions and values.
Team work, making the dream work: In addition to MLS, RBCWM, adidas, 2024 was an incredible year for Partnerships. Whether it was supporting Black owned businesses with Intentionalist. Or the BPC apparel collaborations with Lululemon. Intercultural awareness curriculum development and facilitation with the USC Race & Equity Center, USSF and more.
Looking Ahead to 2025:
Building on this momentum, we have ambitious goals for 2025. We will continue to:
Advocate for Equality: Push for greater representation of Black individuals at all levels of soccer, from the playing field to the boardroom.
Expand Community Impact: Develop new and continue programs and partnerships to create opportunities for youth in underserved communities and promote social justice through soccer.
Amplify Black Voices: Share the stories and experiences of Black players, coaches, and staff to inspire and empower the next generation.
Foster Allyship: Build bridges and collaborate with individuals and organizations who share our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable soccer community.
Thank you for being an integral part of the BPC family. Your support, passion, and dedication make our work possible. Together, we will continue to break down barriers and create a soccer community where everyone feels welcome and valued.
Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
In solidarity,
Allen Hopkins Jr.
